Mobile phone giant Apple has unveiled a new look for its new user interface within its iOS operating system.  The new interface is the first to be overseen by design chief Jony Ive, who said that the aim of the new system was to look “cleaner” and to help “elevate” the content for users.

One of the main shifts in the design has been the move away from real world-inspired textures such as wood and leather.  This visual change will also become apparent in the OS X system used in Macs.

Craig Federighi, the senior vice-president of software engineering for Apple, joked: “We just completely ran out of green felt and wood – this has got to be good for the environment.”

As well as the new visuals, Mr Federighi highlighted the new look of the Game Center app and the parallax effect, which means that icons will now shift against the background image whenever the phone’s user tilts the handset.  This technology is based on feedback from the accelerometer sensor contained within the device.

Jan Dawson, chief telecoms analyst at Ovum, said: “The new version is almost unrecognisable, which will make it polarising.  Some people will love that their phone feels new and different, while others will be disoriented by the newness.”

As part of the announcement, Apple also announced iTunes radio, a new streaming service that will offer access to themed stations and can then be tailored according to the listening history of the user on iTunes.
