It has been announced that mobile network provider EE will be rolling out its new double speed 4G network to customers in 12 UK cities this summer, with coverage being extended to 50% by the end of the year.

The upgrade will be compatible with all current 4GEE business mobiles and other devices, and will be free of charge.  Customers are not required to take any action in order to obtain the upgrade, as it will simply be rolled out via the network.

Whilst the current 4G network has been extremely popular and runs on average twice as fast as the previous 3G, the new double speed will be another big increase, with the average speed reaching 30Mbps (the average for 4G is 15Mbps) and top speeds reaching 60Mbps (the top speed for 4G is 30Mbps).

As the network leader in superfast internet speeds, EE possesses more spectrum than any other mobile provider, as well as the best mix.  This means that EE has the capacity to roll-out the new coverage far more quickly than other networks.  This dominance looks likely to continue, as currently neither O2 nor Three have the capacity to offer a double speed service.  Vodafone is also lagging behind, unable to match either the fast speeds that EE is offering or the roll-out rate.

It is estimated that downloading a movie file of approximately 640MB from the EE store will take a little less than three minutes on the new network – almost half the time measured on the current 4G network.  On 3G, this would take around 20 minutes.  It has also been estimated that downloading a song could take less than four seconds.
