The long anticipated iPhone 6 has been formally launched during an Apple event held in the technology giant’s hometown of Cupertino, California. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO proudly unveiled the latest version of the world’s most popular smartphone to the assembled media at the Flint Centre.

This will be the 9th version of the iPhone since the company first launched the handset in 2007. This model has a new operating system, iOS 8 and features a 4.7-inch screen.

The handset’s outward appearance is the same as the leaked images featured in the news over the last few weeks. There is also to be a larger model with a 5.5 -inch screen.

The new iPhone is slimmer than the last model and has been given a few tweaks to make the most of the extra space on the screen. The home screen, for example, can be viewed in landscape mode as well as portrait.

As for competition, the iPhone 6 Plus measures the same as the LG G3 while the iPhone 6 matches the size of the new Samsung Galaxy Alpha, also launching this week. Both handsets will feature the Apple A8 processor for additional speed. In addition, there is a chip that will measure both running and walking and the number of flights of stairs climbed by the user.

4G speeds of up to 150Mbps will be available, a 50% increase on the iPhone 5s and the improvements mean that the handsets can work with around 200 different 4G networks across the world.

The iPhone 6 will be available for pre-order from the end of this week.
