Various rumours have begun to circulate regarding the newest Samsung Galaxy S handset.  The S5 is highly anticipated, given the overwhelming critical and market success of its predecessors, and there are a number of rumours abounding with regard to which technology will be included.

One of the main rumours is that the handset will include eye-scanning security of some kind.  Lee Young Hee, the executive VP of Samsung’s mobile business, noted that many people were fanatical about the idea of iris recognition technology.  Though she was unable to confirm whether this technology would feature in the S5, Ms Hee did confirm that the handset would be released at the same time as the successor to the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, which will have more advanced features.

If included, the eye sensor would be Samsung’s own unique security measure and would be a reply to the fingerprint sensor of the iPhone 5s.

Another major hint was dropped that the S5 might look quite different physically to the S4.  Commenting on previous handsets in the range, Ms Hee observed that consumers were unable to really feel the difference when the company moved to the S4 from the S3.  She noted that the company would probably go “back to basics” for the new handset and would focus largely on the display and the feel of the cover.

Currently Samsung is the top smartphone seller in world.  It has 32% of the global market – nearly three times as much as Apple – according to analysts Gartner.

The S5 is tipped for a Q1 launch with insider sources suggesting the handset will be formally launched at a London-based event in March.
