htc-m8The Taiwanese manufacturer, eager to ensure that there is no repeat of the disappointing sales recorded following last years’ launch of the HTC One, has staged what it claims to be its ‘biggest ever’ handset launch event at London Olympia.

Despite the fact that the HTC One was widely seen as being one of the leading handsets of the year, it struggled against products released by Samsung and Apple. HTC’s response has been to strengthen its UK presence by 30%, improve its market strategy and overcome supply chain issues. Sales of the HTC One suffered as a result of delays caused by component shortages and a less-than-impressive launch, which together resulted in pre-orders being cancelled in significant numbers.

The company’s UK vice-president, Peter Frølund, said that in order to improve HTC’s exposure in the country even further the search was on for a key account manager and that Camilla Markham had recently been appointed head of marketing communications and sponsorship. He also highlighted the sports sponsorship deal with Sky Sports and O2’s House of Fraser gift card offer on One M8 purchases.

The One M8 launch saw Cher Wang, HTC’s co-founder and chair, make her first official appearance in the UK. She noted that, despite all the problems, the HTC One had become the company’s biggest selling handset ever and added that total sales to date were around seven million. Ms Wang said: “The customer response really inspired us and gave us the desire to make the best even better. With the HTC One M8, the best phone in the world has got even better.”
