EE and Vodafone have both turned on 5G mobile services on the London Underground for the first time.

EE was the first to announce that it upgraded three stations from 4G to 5G on the Northern and Central Lines as it continues its ambitious rollout plans in London and the UK.

Vodafone followed suit, confirming that it will switch on 5G in three tunnels, including Notting Hill Gate station, by the weekend.

The move comes as major telecom providers aim to build an entire “5G ready” infrastructure across the London Underground network before 2025.

EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2 are all working with BAI Communications on the new network for the Tube. This change comes after O2 agreed on a deal with Transport for London (TfL) in 2021.

BAI is currently building an infrastructure to deliver the faster, high-quality digital solutions people and businesses need.

EE Chief Networks Officer Greg McCall said the company is “proud” to be part of a “hugely important and transformational project” in the capital.

EE customers can now access faster 5G speeds and coverage at Archway, Tufnell Park and Notting Hill Gate.

Vodafone covers a similar area on the Northern and Central Lines, with 5G now available between Archway to Kentish Town and Holland Park to Queensway.

Vodafone Chief Digital Officer Theo Blackwell believes the latest rollout is evidence of its commitment to building a “better London for everyone”.

Industry experts are now expecting Three and O2 to make similar announcements as work to bring ultrafast mobile services to the London Underground gathers pace.
