OpenAI Launches GPT-5, Promises ‘PhD-Level’ Expertise
OpenAI has unveiled GPT-5, its most advanced AI model yet, claiming it delivers “PhD-level” performance in multiple areas like coding, writing, and reasoning.
CEO Sam Altman described the release as a major step forward with GPT-5 now “like talking to an expert in any topic.”
The model promises to be faster and more accurate, with fewer “hallucinations” — AI’s tendency to fabricate facts — backed by stronger logic and inference capabilities.
OpenAI says GPT-5 can now even create complete software applications, positioning it as a serious tool for developers.
The launch comes amid fierce competition in AI and concerns about its impact on human workers.
Elon Musk recently touted his Grok chatbot as “better than PhD level in everything,” while Anthropic’s Claude Code targets the same coding market.
OpenAI has also faced tensions with rivals; Anthropic cut off API access after accusing OpenAI of violating usage terms.
Critics urge caution, noting that advanced AI models still face governance and ethics challenges and issues with turning a profit, as many bots are free to use.
“As these models become more capable, the need for comprehensive regulation becomes even more urgent,” said Gaia Marcus of the Ada Lovelace Institute.
Others warn that much of the hype may be marketing, as AI reasoning remains an imitation of human thought.
It’s still full steam ahead for OpenAI, which is rolling out GPT-5 to all users this week, with a free tier available.
Alongside the launch, the company is tweaking ChatGPT to foster healthier interactions and avoid definitive answers to more sensitive personal questions.
Whether GPT-5 truly meets its “expert-level” billing remains to be seen, but the AI arms race shows no signs of slowing.
