Expensive roaming charges in the EU ended on 15th June, meaning that UK residents can now use their normal voice, text and data allowances for their mobile devices throughout the EU as if they were still at home.

However, consumers still need to be careful to avoid unexpected charges in non-EU countries, such as the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, Switzerland and Andorra.

While some mobile phone services providers have dropped roaming charges in non-EU countries, others have not, so consumers need to check with their providers to determine their specific policies.

Consumers also need to keep in mind that the cost of calls to EU countries from the UK will not be affected by the new mobile roaming charge policy. Also, even after the elimination of mobile roaming charges in the EU, consumers will still be subject to charges for exceeding the limits of their voice, text and data allowance when calling from the EU just as they would be if they were at home.

Commenting on the situation, Which? Managing Director of Home Products and Services Alex Neill said: “Many will reap the benefits of these changes and will no longer be put off from making calls abroad. However, it is important that you take a close look at what is or isn’t included in your current mobile deal. Not knowing what’s included could lead to some surprising charges on your next bill.”

It’s not clear whether free roaming will continue for UK residents after Brexit comes into effect.
